How safe is RFID technology?
Over the past few years, RFID (or contactless) credit cards has steady increase in popularity. They are supposed to make our lives easier and more secure when making small retail transactions.
How dose RFID work?
RFID stands for Radio Frequency Identification.
The idea behind this technology is simple and only has three components.
- RFID chip
- RFID Reader
To make it easier to understand this technology, the following analogy is a great example how it works:
Imaging you write number 1 on a piece of paper and place it in to a hat, then write number 2 and place this into the hat. You repeat this again and again until you have 28192 numbers in the hat.
When you place your credit card near a card reader the RFID chip produces a tag, a bit like pulling a random number from out of a hat. It’s near impossible to know what number you’re going to get.
The tags have this data built in, and the card agencies know which piece of data is secured to a certain database submission.
It would take a trillion different tags to find the exact piece of encoded data you need, making it technically impossible to clone the tags. When this technology was first developed, RFID cards was considered to be totally secure.
Unfortunately, things have changed and its now possible to read tags and make a clone. To make a clone card, someone would need to scan a victims card without them knowing, this is known as RFID skimming and it’s on the increase.
What is RFID skimming?
RFID skimming is when someone gets close enough to you so they can scan your credit card RFID tag.
They can then clone your card with the tag data and use it to go shopping at your expense.
There is new technology that prevents tag cloning, but it’s still early days and it will take a while before it’s put into action.
How to protect your RFID credit card?
For now, the only solution is to make sure your cards can only be read when you want it to be.
The best way to do this is by protecting your cards with RFID blocking sleeves. When you inserted your credit card into one of these sleeves it stops anyone using a skimming device grabbing your cards data.
These credit card sleeve protectors keeps you cards safe from criminals grabbing the RFID tag data. With the ever-increasing credit card Freud, these credit cards sleeves are essential.
